The K-3 comes equipped with a CMOS image sensor with approximately 24 effective megapixels. Based on the design scheme that puts priority on image resolution, it is designed without an optical AA (anti-aliasing) filter. The result is that the K-3 makes the best use of the total resolving power of the 24-megapixel CMOS sensor to produce sharp, fine-etailed images rich in gradation, while faithfully recreating the sense of depth, ambience and texture in aptured images.
AA filters are designed to reduce false color and moiré by separating light by frequencies and obscuring outlines.
Although the K-3 has no AA filter, it generates very little false color hanks to the large number of pixels present. Even when false color is generated, it is kept to an undetectable level.

With its top sensitivity of ISO 51200, the K-3 delivers high-quality, noise-free images even when they are taken at low-light locations using higher ISO sensitivities. You can even adjust a sensitivity range in the ISO AUTO mode, and control the noise reduction level.
for extra-accurate detection of the subject’s shape and color
An image captured by the K-3’s RGB light-metering sensor with approximately 86,000 pixels resembles a Live View image. Unlike conventional metering sensors which measure the subject’s light level only, it even measures the subject’s primary color and its motion with great precision, then feeds the obtained data instantly to the PENTAX Real-time Scene Analysis System.
The center sensor and two sensors just above and below it are designed to detect the luminance flux of an F2.8 lens for high-precision autofocusing. When using a very fast lens with a shallow depth of field, these sensors greatly improve the focusing accuracy.
The K-3’s high-sensitivity AF sensor assures dependable autofocus operation down to a minimum luminance of –3 EV (when using 25 middle sensors), preventing the AF mechanism from slowing down or being confused by high-contrast areas in back-lit situations. It also captures low-contrast subjects with great accuracy.
to simplify astronomical photography and position data recording
By mounting the optional O-GPS1 GPS Unit onto the K-3’s hotshoe, you can record the latitude, longitude and altitude of a shooting location and the camera’s precise direction on a captured image. The K-3’s CMOS image sensor also allows you to automatically trace the movement of celestial bodies, without the need of an equatorial telescope. The K-3 even adjusts its clock to local time based on the GPS data.
for efficient image data filing on two memory cards
The K-3’s card slot accepts two SD memory cards, with a choice of three data storage modes: “Serial” to store a large volume of data, “Duplicate” for simplified data backup, and “RAW/JPEG Division” to separate data files based on the recording format.
Note: The second receptacle of the SD card slot accepts an Eye-Fi card or FLUCARD to enable wireless LAN functions.
